ARTIST STATEMENT

I am concerned with how to visibly manifest invisible processes, from the large-scale systems that govern our society to those that power our minds and bodies. My work turns inward as well as outward, existing in conversation with neuroscience, ecology, and landscape design, while also being deeply personal and emotional. I seek to make meaning across multiple scales of space and time, and though much of my work builds on my own life, it is also relatable and accessible to viewers who may not know the stories behind it. As someone who looks closely, feels deeply, and finds beauty in life’s small moments, I situate myself among landscape and installation artists who strive to convey the life and energy of even the most mundane situations, objects, places, and experiences. I explore the way people’s perceptions of themselves inform the ways they relate to their surroundings and their communities, and the vast potential for intangible yet unshakeable connections between people and places.

Though I have extensive experience with painting and printmaking, I enjoy combining a wide variety of nontraditional materials, creating interactive mixed-media installations that bring the viewer through a unique, immersive experience. I work with many found and repurposed materials, allowing their connotations and histories to challenge me and influence my intuitive, experimental processes. By giving new life and energy to everyday objects, even trash, my work also interrogates consumer culture and engages with the realities of climate change. I strive to be conscious of my materials’ lifespans before and after their use in my work, and I recognize that many of my materials will outlive me. This knowledge only makes me more inspired to use my time as an artist wisely and joyfully, with the hope of having a lasting positive impact on the world. My work envisions a future in which people feel deeply rooted in their individual identities and immediate communities, while also realizing that they are part of a larger interconnected system.

I am an artist, athlete, teacher, and running coach living and working in western Massachusetts.
